Halloween started 3,000 years ago by pagan people who lived in the
European British Isles and who were called the Celts. These people worshipped and
feared a false god by the name of Samhain (Sow - in).
In Proverbs 1:7 the Bible states that we are to fear the true and living God Jehovah, and
that means to greatly respect Him, which leads to love and obedience towards
Him.
Samhain is a dragon god and his name means "lord of death and darkness".
The Celts celebrated a feast, that was based on their fear of Samhain,
every October 31st through November 2nd. To appease him they believed
they should acknowledge him during the season when the days got shorter
and the nights were getting longer. The Druids (high priest of the Celts)
also had the honor of lighting a bonfire in honor of the sun god, which humans
were thrown into as sacrifices. Because the Celts believed that during
this time, Samhain would open the door between death and life and would
allow the dead to take over animals that would torment people, the Celts
would leave food outside their doors to appease the spirits and keep them
away from their houses. They also would dress up like the evil spirits
in an attempt to fool the spirits. They used carved out turnips and beets,
that represented human skulls, as good luck charms to ward off evil
spirits.
Note: Today we use Jack O Lanterns and put candles inside. However,
when Jack, the man who the Jack O Lantern is named after, first made a pact
with the devil, the fire inside of the Jack O Lantern represented the fires of
hell.
The Romans also celebrated two festivals during Oct 31st. The Teranian
Festival which celebrated the dead and the Pomona Festival which
celebrated the goddess Pomona of the Harvest. Pomona's sacred fruit was the apple.
With the Roman conquest of the Celtics (don't we have a basketball team
named after these pagans?), all of these pagan rituals became
intermingled.
When the Catholic church tried to convert these people, they named Oct
31st "All Hollows Eve", and Nov 1st "All Saints Day", and Nov 2nd "All Souls
Day". Later Oct 31st was named Halloween. So today we are still
carrying on this work, because we don't know the danger and spiritual significance
attached to Halloween. God says that if we want Him to be our Father, we
must come out from among the unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). Jesus
Christ came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8), the church
should have also destroyed the Samhain feast, but instead they compromised
with the devilish works of this holiday and are still compromising today.
